You may be happy to learn that every day there are new advancements being made in orthodontics. What this means to you is there are more treatment options available to you. However, if you are trying to decide what kind of braces you need, the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming.

What Are Self-Ligating Braces

If you are considering braces, you might want to consider self-ligating braces or SLBs.
SLBs are similar to traditional braces, with one major exception. Traditional braces, unlike SLBs, use elastomeric rings or ligature wires to anchor the archwire into place. The archwire is what helps the appliance maneuver teeth into the right place. Instead of elastomeric rings or ligature wires, SLBs use specially designed clips that do not need to be tightened.

Types Of Self-Ligating Braces

If you do decide to choose SLBs, there will be a plethora of brands to choose from. Do not worry, we will help you choose the right brand that best fits your specific needs and lifestyle.
Most SLBs fall into two categories:

Passive:

The archwire for passive SLBs is much smaller than active SLBs and provides the teeth with more room to move. Sometimes Amy James, DMD, MS will prescribe passive SLBs when you are just beginning treatment, so as to gently start guiding teeth into places.

Active:

Active SLB are much more assertive. The archwire is stronger and thicker. There is greater pressure applied to the teeth, and more control is exerted. These braces are typically much more effective.

Why Choose Self-Ligating Braces?

Of course, each brand of self-ligating braces varies in the benefits it will provide you with. Without going into the specifics of each brand, let us talk about the overall advantages of SLBs. If you choose SLBs you will experience:
  • Shorter treatment times
  • Quicker installation
  • Fewer appointments (because there is no need to tighten elastic)
  • Clear or ceramic SLBS are very subtle and will not stand out as much as traditional braces

Manufacturers of SLBS tend to take the claims a little further and argue that their specific product:
  • Reduces friction
  • Minimizes the potential for extraction
  • Provides a more effective occlusal result
  • Grows buccal alveolar bone
  • Is less painful

Dental Hygiene With Self-Ligating Braces

Perhaps the biggest benefit of choosing SLBs is that they are much easier to clean. The latex in traditional braces is notorious for trapping food in hard to reach places. Of course, we are not suggesting that you be less fastidious in your brushing and flossing routine, but there is less of a chance that you will miss latent food particles that result in decay and tooth damage.
